This year the number of categories was reduced to make for a concise list of winners. There were some changes made to the categories too, for example The MVP and Hustler of the Year category were merged. Best Video award were awarded to the directors of the respective videos instead of the artists. While Kings Of The Province, Best Graffiti Artist and the Best Dance Crew were removed.

The big winners of the night were Flame, Cassper and YoungstaCPT. Flame won Best Freshman of the Year and Best male of The year. Cassper won the Hustler of The Year and His Fill Up Concert came through as Best Promoter of The Year. YoungstaCPT walked away with Best Video of the Year and Best Album of The Year.

Another big win was Nadia Nakai winning Best Female Rapper of the Year which is her first major award. Cassper celebrating Nadia wins said he will be celebrating her for the next two years.

The South African Hip-Hop Awards were started in 2012 by Ritual Media Group, a company owned by South African hip-hop entrepreneur Osmic Menoe aka Ace of Spades.
