Top 10 SA Hip Hop Albums of the Decade

Top 10 SA Hip Hop Albums of the Decade: The SA hip-hop industry is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing music industries in the world and one of the largest in Africa. Between 2009 and 2019 we have had albums that have impacted greatly not only in SA but worldwide.

This year marks the end of a decade and we present to you our list of top 10 albums for the decade.

1. Levels – AKA

“Levels” is the second studio album of AkA following his debut release “Altar Ego”. It was released on the 30th of June 2014, a week before the official date for its release. The following year the album was certified gold selling over 20 000 copies after its release.

2. DakarII – Kwesta

Dakar 11 is the third studio album of SA artist, Kwesta. Released on June 26, 2016, the album was recently certified Diamond is currently the highest-selling SA Hip hop album.

3. Avery – Emtee
Avery is Emtee’s debut album and was released in 2015. The album was nominated for the South African Music Award for Newcomer of the Year and went ahead to win South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album for the year 2016.

4. Paradise – A-Reece
Paradise is A-Reece debut album under Ambitiouz Entertainment. The album was released on 21 October 2016 with features from then fellow Ambitiouz label-mates Emtee, P-Jay and multi-platinum selling songstress, Amanda Black. It was nominated for the South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2017.

5. Strings and Blings – Nasty- C
The second studio album by South African rap artist, Nasty C, Strings and Blings was released in June 2018 by Universal Music Group. The album has won the award for the South African Music Award for Best Produced Album and South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2019.

6. Family Values – Riky Rick
The debut studio album by South African rapper, Riky Rick was released in April 2015. It features guest appearances from Cassper Nyovest, Okmalumkoolkat, Zano and Black Motion. The album was certified platinum by RISA after selling more than 30 000 copies.

7. Thuto – Cassper Nyovest
Thuto is Cassper’s third studio album. The album is a follow up of his album in 2105, “Refiloe”. Thuto was released on 5 May 2017 by his imprint Family Tree Records with support from Bridge Entertainment and has been certified platinum by RISA.

8. Street Government – Duncan
The album. Street Government, was released in 2014 by Duncan. The 16 track album was nominated for the South African Music Award for Newcomer of the Year, South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album both in 2015.

9. Skhanda Republic – K.O
The debut studio album by hip hop act, K.O was released in 2014. According to Wikipedia, Skhanda Republic is believed to be one of the albums that solidified hip-hop in South Africa. The Album won the South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2015.

10. Yellow – Shane Eagle
Released in August 2017, Yellow is Shane Eagle’s debut album. The album went ahead to win South African Music Award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2018.
