His performances drew interest from European clubs, and he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2018 for a South African record cost of about £2.7 million. Tau went on loan to Belgian second division team Union SG for the 2018-19 season, where he helped them win the Belgian Cup and was named Player of the Season. He then went on loan to Club Brugge for the 2019-20 season, where he scored on his debut and helped the team win the league championship. The following season, he was loaned to Anderlecht, where he scored in his first appearance.

Tau was recalled by Brighton in January 2021, making his FA Cup debut and league debut shortly thereafter against Manchester City. Despite his limited appearances, he provided an assist against West Ham in May.
